How I Hunt Bourbon

A constant phrase that I'll probably blurp out more than once here on bourbonboomed is "the bourbon game is a cruel-cruel world"…

Bourbon is a "thing" that actually gets grown folk absolutely geek'd in a way that turns them into hunters, gatherers, and excited little kids while fending off fellow bourbon friends and foes alike trying to find all the honeyholes with all the bottled brown-gold to stock up on for personal enjoyment or the pursuit of uber douche-dom and uber douche-riches in the act of "flipping" bottles…

For me… The hunt is on 24/7, 365, my bourbon game never sleeps!!

I am constantly on the forums, blogs, and social media gathering info on when releases are hitting and where. I live in Boulder, CO and our bottles tend to be on delay compared to everyone else in the country, as well as even in the state. So for me, the hunt never ends, it's a guessing game, but educated guesses can help put you in the right situation to get some bourbon…

What does get me the bourbons I want most of the time is bourbon relationships, bourbon persistency, and bourbon consistency.

I'll repeat that: bourbon relationships, bourbon persistency, and bourbon consistency.

I am bourbon annoying. When I want something(bourbon), I do what a got to do to make it happen. I am bourbon ruthless, bourbon hard headed, bourbon motivated, and bourbon driven..

But mostly just bourbon OCD!!!

Every bourbon hunter and gatherer dreams of walking into a shop stocked to the brim with ones favorites. A shop that is a utopia with all the BTAC, Pappy, Cask Strengths, and Dusty's from every era and distillery. As well as all the extra aged statements that one can handle. A small, local, whiskey boutique safe haven that no other bourbon hunter and gatherer will come across!!!

Whelp, that ain't happening!! In todays bourbon game, everyone is playing dirty, and only the strong will survive. It's like Darwins Theory:Survival of the Fittest…

Just like anything else getting the bourbon bottles you want is usually about the relationships you build..

Liquor stores have become so selective these days with who gets what bc of the whole bourbon boom thing... Prices are so elevated and bottles have become so scarce but we all want whatever we can get our grubby little hands on, even if whats in the bottle isn't really worth it from a quality per pice standpoint, don't even get me started on "craft distilleries"....

I have about 10-20 liquor stores on my radar here in Colorado as well as multiple online resources that ship here and some friends around the states that have access to things that I do not…

About 5 of those stores I touch base with multiple times each and every week to get info on whats stocked and whats coming soon. Some of those shops are small mom and pop shops and some are large big box stores…

At my main liquor store I know the whole liquor department by name and I usually talk to the liquor Manager 3-4 times a week via in store or on the phone gathering info on whats around, I try to stay "in the know" as much as possible..

Every store I go to, I try and touch base with every Liquor Manager if available and as many employees as I can. I'll chat it up about whiskey with whoever will listen to try and build that rapport...

Bourbon Relationships, Bourbon Persistency, Bourbon Consistency, Some Good/Dumb Luck, and being in the right place at the right time is what gets the good good!!!!

Cheers and Happy Hunting,
